Leadership NJ Gov. Christie vetoes Internet gambling bill that would have made his state the first in the nation to legalize Internet gambling. Senate Bill 490 passed by wide margins --- in the Assembly by a 63-11 vote, while in the Senate the vote was 34-2 in favor. "The governor pointed to what he called the “legal fiction” of deeming that all Internet bets were originating in Atlantic City just because the online betting infrastructure was located there."
New Jersey Senate leader speaks out on pensions. "The leader of the New Jersey Senate says pension and health care benefits for the average public safety worker cost local governments $47,000 a year. He says those costs will cause the systems to collapse unless workers start paying more." He's a Democrat.

Meanwhile, a good man has had enough. The superintendent of Rhode Island's state police resigned a week after a disagreement between Doherty and the Providence Public Safety Commissioner over Providence, RI's refusal to participate in e-verify to determine if criminal suspects are in the country illegally. ( Hispanics are now the majority in the city.) Doherty denounced the decision as “dangerous and irresponsible.” Governor Chaffee (D) preferred not to hear this.
